Gunadala Hills
The picture perfect picnic destination is located on the east of Vijaywada. The place offers a panoramic view of the city along with Benz Circle, known for its array of malls. Gunadala Hills Church which is also known as St. Mary’s Church is a popular pilgrimage destination of the region. Each year lakhs of devotees flock to the church to seek blessings of almighty. The special church festival between February 9 and 11 each year attracts approximately 5 lakhs people. Devotees need to climb 400 steps to reach the church. On top of the hill there is huge statue of crucified Christ.Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary
For all the nature lovers and bird watchers, Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary is a treat to be at. The sanctuary is located near Guntur in Uppalapadu village. The sanctuary is filled with water tanks all over which make it a favorite place for birds to take refuge. A large number of birds including some of the endangered species like spot-billed pelicans and painted storks can be spotted at the premises. Experts say that during the migratory season birds from as far as Siberia and Australia make the sanctuary their home and use it as their nesting ground. The best time to visit is from September to February.Undavalli Caves
Another mesmerizing tourist attraction near Tenali are the beautiful Undavalli Caves. The caves are a popular tourist attraction of Guntur and are situated on the banks of Krishna River. These caves are a fine example of Indian rock-cut architecture. The caves have been carved from solid sandstone and date back to around 4th and 5th centuries. A great place for photography and for history lovers, these caves tell a tale about the glorious past of the region. The caves give a glimpse of Buddhist architecture as well. The main cave belongs to the earliest examples of Gupta architecture, primarily primitive rock-cut monastery cells carved into the sandstone hills. The lush green forest cover and the pristine background around the caves is certainly a treat for the eyes.There are several caves, but the largest and the best known cave has four stories. It also has a giant statue of Lord Vishnu in reclining position which was sculpted from a single granite block on the second floor of the cave. The other shrines inside the cave premises are dedicated to the holy Trinity of Hinduism – Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.
Balasubramanya Temple
The famous Balasubramanya Temple is located in Vijaywada. Legend has it that a visit to the Balasubramanya Temple helps people in finding their life partners. And this is done within forty days of the visit. Devotees are required to climb a flight of around 350 steps to reach the temple. It is said that Tuesdays are the most auspicious day to visit the holy shrine. One can take a cab or APSRTC bus service from Tenali to reach the temple.Timings Everyday 6:00 am – 11:00 am; 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Prakasam Barrage
Prakasam Barrage is built on Krishna River. The structure stretches stretches 1223.5 m and connects Guntur and Krishna districts. Prakasam Barrage regulates the water flow of Krishna River and is a site not to be missed. The barrage also serves as a road bridge and spans over a lake. There are three canals associated with the barrage. These canals run through the city of Vijaywada giving it a Venetian feel. The view of Vijaywada city from top of the barrage is mesmerizing. The area is also a very popular tourist attraction. Andhra Pradesh largely owes its rich agriculture to the Prakasam dam as the project facilitated the irrigation of large tracts of farmland. The dam provides views of the lake.Mangalagiri Temple
Mangalagiri Temple is located in Mangalagiri town, a small town in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. Mangalagiri literally translates to the holy hill. The temple is an important religious destination in the region. Experts say that Mangalagiri temple is one of the eight places where Lord Vishnu manifested himself. There are three Narasimha Swamy temples in Mangalagiri. One is Panakala Narasimha Swamy on the hill. Another one is Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at the foot of the temple. Third one is Gandala Narasimha Swamy at the top of the hill. The shape of the hill resembles an elephant. You can see it from whichever direction and it would appear to be an elephant only. Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple is situated on the hill. On the right side of the steps a stone inscription by Sri Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagar can be spotted. As you go further the foot prints of Mahaprabhu Chaitanya can be seen.The temple of Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy is behind the temple of Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy . To the west of the temple there is a tunnel which is said to lead you directly to Undavalli Caves.
Festivals in Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy
Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Brahmothsavam is very important annual festival. It is a 11 day festival which starts from phalguna sudda shasti (February - March). One day before Phalguna Suddha Purnima i.e. on Chaturdasi, the marriage of Santha Narasimha Swamy, and Sridevi and Bhoodevi is performed and celebrated with great enthusiasm.
Srirama Navami, Hanumana Jayanthi, Narasimha Jayanthi, Vaikunta Ekadasi, and Mahasivarathri are other festivals that are celebrated with great zeal at the temple. On Mahashivratri a great procession with the deity on a big chariot is taken out.
Gandalayam
It is said that on the top of the hill, there is a facility to light a lamp. Devotes who face miseries in life light a lamp of cow ghee at the top of the hill and get rid of their problems. It is said that the lamp can be seen from the neighboring villages as well.Travel Agents in Tenali
